Write/edit copy for all department print/electronic communications, publications (e-newsletter, annual report), and marketing materials for the department, including posters, brochures, news releases, stories, articles, and flyers, adhering to university and college style and brand standards.
Research and write specialized and technical content for stories that highlight the departmental success, increasing the department’s local and international visibility.
Coordinate the design of print and electronic communications with graphic designer, and produce materials as needed using graphic design software.
Oversee and update departmental website with new information.
Plan and implement the department’s social media efforts.
Organize and prepare photos for stories with image editing software.
Coordinate video projects that highlight the department and its successes.
Consistently communicate the institute’s vision and mission.
Collaborate with Alumni Relations and Corporate Relations on designing key messages for outreach.

The primary role of the Communications Specialist is to execute and support efforts to increase awareness and interest in the University of Minnesota Department of Industrial & System Engineering. Responsibilities include assisting in the planning and execution of all marketing and communications efforts, such as content ideation and writing, social media promotion, graphic design, editing and website management as well as event planning and outreach. The right candidate will be proficient in design programs, have strong writing ability and a good understanding of how to utilize web presence and social media channels for marketing purposes.
Strategic communication and content production (60%)
The Communications Specialist makes recommendations and assists department leadership on communications planning. The position interprets policies and practices to best leverage the impact and reach of the department's communications, while also ensuring that the department's efforts coordinate with efforts at the college or university levels. This position analyzes multiple events happening on the large and small scales to coordinate efforts around common themes and recommend changes for more effective and efficient communications. The Communications Specialist works closely with the department's leadership on the creation of high-level, key messages, talking points, and branded materials for use at alumni, public, and internal presentations. The Communications Specialist ensures that all communication tools are designed to engage targeted stakeholders, enhance and promote the reputation of the department, and provide accurate and interesting information about the department and how its students, post-doctoral associates, faculty and staff members are involved in education, research, and outreach. The position will also help garner support from and recruit prospective students, faculty, and donors. Duties will also include development of specific tools, ranging from in-depth articles in the printed newsletter to the creation of videos or content strategy for the department website, which will require in-depth research and analysis. The Communications Specialist is responsible for ensuring that all communication initiatives are evaluated using qualitative methods such as informal surveys, attendance figures, and participant feedback. This feedback will be used as the baseline for more formal quantitative evaluation methods such as formal surveys, and to develop new strategies, goals and objectives for future initiatives.
While this position will participate in the development of strategic communications plans, the Communications Specialist is also responsible for execution of communications plans. This includes creating, writing, editing, taking photos, and producing video for all printed, electronic, and social media tools. This also includes evaluating these tools for their effectiveness and reach, building that effectiveness and reach through marketing and outreach, and keeping current on the latest communication trends and evaluating their potential use. The position will also write e-mail updates to faculty, staff members, students, and postdoctoral associates with timely updates on news, awards, accomplishments, and upcoming events; determine content, write, and edit the annual ISyE magazine about department activities to alumni, donors, and friends; write, and edit, and take photos/video for regular and timely website postings; write, design and determine content for informational/promotional flyers and brochures for the department, used for special events and recruitment of students and faculty; and work with freelancers on major projects such as the creation of videos and design of the department's printed newsletter.
The Communications Specialist is expected to take initiative to determine stories, photos, content and focus for the department's communications efforts, ensuring that they meet the goals of the department's strategic plan, and presents those initiatives to the department's leadership.
Event marketing including outreach (30%)
The Communications Specialist works with other event planners to define goals and specific audiences for events and outreach activities and identify success markers. This includes specific planning for department events and graduate seminars etc., defining event goals, outlining logistic needs and how to meet those needs, recruiting speakers, and organizing program content. This entails working closely with the college’s development officer on special events, marketing, and targeted communications to alumni and donors. The Communications Specialist will also work closely with faculty and staff members to meet each outreach program's specific goals.
Other responsibilities as assigned (10%)
Requires BA/BS degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations or related field plus 2 years professional experience, or a combination of related education and/or relevant professional experience totaling 6 years
Experience developing or implementing a communications plan for a company or organization.
Strong oral and written communications skills with an emphasis on detail and accuracy
Experience developing and implementing a social media plan
Excellent leadership and training skills
News writing experience with proficiency in Associated Press style
Experience with photography and/or video production
