The Division of Finance and Administration at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville invites applications and nominations for the position of executive director for Conferences & Non-Credit Programs.
Reporting to the Senior Associate Vice Chancellor for Finance & Administration, the executive director is responsible for all aspects of Conferences and Non-Credit Programs. The department has 22 full-time staff and a combined annual operating budget of approximately $7 million.

UT-Knoxville Conferences provide professional meeting management services, conference facilities and dining services to businesses, professional groups and educational meetings for the university community and the private sector. The UT-Knoxville Non-Credit Programs offers a wide variety of courses and programs aimed at enhancing quality of life and career opportunities for those in Knoxville and the East Tennessee Region.
The executive director for Conferences and Non-Credit Programs will be responsible for leading the strategic vision for the department and supporting the growing needs of the University. The executive director will develop strategic relationships with campus constituencies and community entities in accommodation and promotion of UT-Knoxville conference facilities and services. The executive director will collaborate with the Office of Campus Events Services and the office of Auxiliary Services in regards to overall scheduling and programming.
A bachelor’s degree in business, hospitality management, marketing, or related discipline is required. Five years of progressively responsible experience in a large complex business unit with supervisory duties is required. Candidates will have demonstrated experience creating a strategic vision for a complex organization. Candidates will have a proven record of accomplishments in conferences, event planning/ management, program development, and financial background.
Master’s degree. 10 years of progressively responsible experience in a large complex business unit. Professional certification (CMP) and experience with a One Stop Shop Certified department is highly desirable. A proven record of success in planning and problem solving within a successful organization is preferred. Experience partnering with a university preferred. Similar experience in a higher education environment of a similar size institution a plus.
Duties and Responsibilities
Establishes strategic goals & objectives and makes recommendations for policy and procedure implementation.
Implements marketing strategies to both internal and external clients.
Monitors financial performance by reviewing reports, adjusting cost models, and reducing expenses.
Provides guidance to departments ensuring customer satisfaction for every event and program.
Identifies potential revenue streams with a focus on efficiency improvements and collaboration with other service center/auxiliary units.
Maintains pace with industry standards and best practices.
Manages fiscal oversight and operations: job scheduling, personnel management, equipment replacement and purchasing.
Reviews and interprets request for proposals (RFPs) and contracts/maintenance agreements related to operations.
Serves on various committees and off campus by participation in professional associations.
