SmithBucklin is seeking an Executive Director of Engagement and Client Operations located in our Washington, D.C. office to serve our client organization the Events Industry Council (EIC).
Under the direction of the EIC’s Chief Executive Officer, the Director of Engagement and Client Operations has overall responsibility for event, CMP Certification & education program management; membership and operations, project management, financial and general business operations; and member service functions of the organization. The individual in this role will provide operational leadership and management oversight, engage the appropriate resources to support EIC’s portfolio of products and services, and direct the work of a matrix team of functional specialists in collaboration with the CEO. The EIC Director of Engagement and Client Operations will work closely with the board of directors, Council of Delegates, headquarters staff and volunteers to achieve the organization’s mission to coalesce and advance the global events industry, and the professionals who lead the business of meetings.
The Events Industry Council’s 33+ member organizations represent over 103,500 individuals and 19,500 firms involved in the events industry. Its four signature programs—Sustainability, Industry Insights, Knowledge, Leadership—represent the key initiatives, assets, services and products for the Events Industry Council. EIC works to advance the events industry and the professionals who lead the business of meetings. The Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) program was launched in 1985 to enhance the knowledge and performance of meeting professionals, promote the status and credibility of the meeting profession and advance uniform standards of practice. Today, the CMP credential is recognized globally as the badge of excellence in the events industry.
Directly supervise membership and operations staff; provide oversight, project management leadership and lead and coordinate matrix staff team in support of the EIC’s goals, priorities and desired outcomes.
Oversee contractor(s) hired to manage signature program areas related to sustainability and best practices/standards development
Develops strategic partnership, builds relationships with industry partners, manage trade show calendar and coordinate association participation in industry events/shows. Coordinate with EIC staff team in executing successful outcomes and evaluation of the partnerships and ongoing asset activations
Oversee other business development initiatives and membership growth strategies
Oversee operational functions, to include general customer service, including vendor relationships and contracts.
Direct staff in generating relevant, accurate and timely reporting that assist with understanding trends in association programs; communicating those trends to association volunteer leaders and staff
Oversee budget and finances, including management of annual budget development process and preparation of monthly forecasting and projections for the CEO ,Treasurer and Finance Committee
Assist CEO with the management of the Board of Directors and Board standing committees in determination and execution of programs; assure strategic goals are being met and future leaders are being mentored
Draft correspondence to board and volunteers; may include the creation and editing of newsletters and oversee the development of general marketing materials developed team members
Represent the CEO/organization at member events (e. IMEX), presentations/panels as needed to promote association programs. Develop relationships with members, suppliers and industry leaders in support of furthering association strategy
Assist CEO in new product/program development, research proposals, needs assessment surveys, prepare reports for board consideration
Ensure that all aspects of EIC operations are leveraging technology platforms to enable high standards of member care and to support operational effectiveness for the organization.

Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year institution or equivalent experience
Sales & Marketing ,and /or Business Development experience
8+ years of relevant professional experience, to include direct supervisory responsibilities
Experience working in the Events Industry in a leadership capacity; and demonstrates passion for the global events industry lasting legacy impact.
Background in certifications and standards relevant but not required
Prior experience with association trade groups and volunteer management is highly preferred
Database experience and website skills are preferred
Proficiency with basic computer programming, including the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
