Mental Health America is seeking a Senior Director of Conference & Special Event Production in Alexandria, VA, to strategize, plan, organize, and manage all aspects of Mental Health America’s in-person, virtual, and hybrid meetings and special events, including our Annual Conference.
Here’s who we’re looking for:
You LOVE all things events – from major multi-day hybrid conferences to destination hybrid meetings – from the big picture strategy to developing detailed project plans, budgets, and timelines, to overseeing and executing each and every detail. You are proactive, take initiative, think steps ahead, and always have a Plan B and C in your pocket. You’re the type of person who trusts but verifies each detail is moving on time and on budget. You are familiar with event technologies and innovative ways to create meaningful, engaging, and tech-efficient event solutions. You can speak AV, troubleshooting solutions, and understand the nuances and innovative engagement options for hybrid events. You are very comfortable managing VIP speakers, communicating with Board and Sponsors, and love building rapport with key off-site venue staff and vendors. You can easily write and review marketing language, event scripts, and session descriptions. When you are charged with growing attendance from 600 to 1,000, you relish the opportunity to surpass previous benchmarks. When an event pops up, you move into swift action to ask questions to understand the scope and then make it happen. Being onsite to execute the production of a conference or other events gives you a rush. You ensure MHA program staff, senior team, and Board can focus on mission and strategic content while you take full control of logistics, run of show, scripting, speaker coordination, print materials, food ordering, A/V, staffing, and all things hotel/venue.
A note: Although many MHA staff work remotely, this position is not eligible for full-time remote employment as many events take place in the Washington, DC area.
Strategize, Plan, Direct, and Execute all aspects of MHA events (in-person, virtual, and hybrid formats)
Develop systems, project plans and timelines for each event; monitor and adhere to deadlines and proactively communicate progress to supervisor, identifying potential roadblocks or challenges
Leverage current trends, best practices, technology, and AV solutions to create engaging hybrid events, onsite activations, and streamlined event platforms
Coordinate all aspects of event production across programs and functions (i.e. Marketing, Fundraising, Programs, Tech, Finance, etc.) to ensure events meet vision, scope, and budget.
Source, coordinate, and ensure execution of all logistical aspects, including venue selection, speaker identification, and coordination, call for proposals, print materials, run of shows, communications, marketing, AV/Tech, etc.
Responsible for overseeing all aspects of on-site production from room set-ups, AV, speaker logistics, signage, food & beverage, hotel rooms, VIPs
Work with MHA leadership to continually evolve the event process to free up program staff to support MHA’s mission
Support local MHA affiliates with technical assistance related to their own events and prioritize them at MHA events
Develop strategy and oversee the creation of any event websites or apps, writing content and managing multi-media marketing goals for the timeline (e.g. website, social media, e-marketing, advertising, etc.)
Budget Management Coordination
Work with finance staff to set budgets and projections
Work with Chief Marketing and Advancement Officer to craft sponsorship requests, track benefits, and ensure event deliverables are met
The ideal candidate has:
A bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 6 years in conference or event planning
Proven experience managing engaging in-person, virtual events and hybrid events
Prior experience managing conferences of 500+ attendees
Expertise in hybrid events and conference activations
Experience working in health or human service fields
Excellent project management skills
Strong writing, editing, presentation, and other communication skills
Excellent project management and organizational skills and attention to detail
Professional or personal experience with mental health and/or other chronic health conditions or disabilities is a plus.

We also sponsor and/or implement community service to educate the public and professional organizations in order to promote a healthy society in which those with mental illness are accorded respect, dignity, and the opportunity to achieve their full potential free from stigma and prejudice.
MHABJ operates a psychiatric rehabilitation program called Island House, which helps adults with severe and persistent mental illness work on the recovery goals of their choice. This is a Medicaid-funded program and is available to anyone living in Beaufort or Jasper counties. We also have a limited number of scholarship slots and a private pay option.
