The Center for Real Estate and Finance (CREF), established in 2009, is the foremost thought leader and connector for hospitality real estate and finance. Defined by its industry experience and engagement, the center is respected as a leader of real estate and finance. Built on a tradition of the Cornell Peter and Stephanie Nolan School of Hotel Administration's reputation for its renowned real estate program, the center is at the forefront of all areas of hospitality real estate--from institutional investing to private equity to development to asset management.
The mission of The Cornell Center for Real Estate and Finance is to act as the nexus between the hospitality real estate and finance industry, broadly defined, and the Cornell University community (faculty, students, and alumni). In this context, CREF leverages the engagement of practicing real estate professionals to enhance the educational experience of Cornell's graduate and undergraduate students studying hospitality real estate and to inform our Real Estate Faculty regarding industry trends to better prepare them as they design and teach courses. In doing so, CREF advances the reputation of Nolan School of Hotel Administration, the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business, and Cornell University as an educational force within the hospitality real estate community both domestically and internationally.
Assistant Director, Center for Real Estate and Finance (CREF) Opportunity:

The Assistant Director will oversee the administration and operation of the center, collaborating with the Academic Director to develop operating procedures, programming, and practices, and managing relationships with over 60 board members of corporate affiliates. The Assistant Director will provide superior client service to the board members and partners, acting as the liaison and Cornell representative. The position is instrumental in building and maintaining the center's corporate relationships. Additionally, the Assistant Director will build strong relationships with multiple stakeholders, including students, faculty and staff. Finally, this role will frequently collaborate with our other Assistant Directors within the College's Centers and Institutes, working together as a team when necessary to support each other's functions, events, and general operations.
Key Responsibilities include:
- Develop and administer the center budget which includes restricted gift funds, endowment income and operating funds, approximately $300-400K per year, while displaying strong stewardship of the college's finances.
- Manage program activities, including exclusive management and administration of programs/events, from 5 to 10 programs/events per academic year.
- Represent CREF, the Nolan School of Hotel Administration and the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business, both on- and off-Campus, in matters related to program development, implementation and efficiency.
- Coordinate communications and public relations efforts on behalf of the showcase events, including but not limited to websites, social media, posters, brochures, newsletters, press releases, email solicitations, annual reports and fundraising efforts.
- Manage the relationship for approximately 60 board members representing corporate affiliates.
- Assist with soliciting new board members.
- Organize and run 2-3 board meeting per year.
- Manage finances, including budgeting and board member contract renewals.
- Organize student educational programs including but not limited to student treks and events.
- Administer the executive-in-residence program.
- Act jointly with the SC Johnson College of Business Career Management team on networking-based programming
- Produce marketing materials for the center's programming
Required Qualifications:
- Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
- Bachelor's degree in business management, with 3 to 5 years of relevant experience. Experience may be in program management, operations management, customer service or event planning.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills with an ability to collaborate with multiple stakeholders.
- Ability to demonstrate a strong service orientation.
- Expert time management and organizational skills.
- Tolerance for ambiguity and shifting priorities with the ability to manage multiple tasks and set priorities.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to schedule tasks to meet deadlines.
- Ability to exercise discretion and sound judgment in interactions and with sensitive and confidential information. Strong computer skills, as well as an ability to use technology to facilitate tasks.
- Ability to write effectively, persuasively, and accurately.
- Must be willing to work occasional nights/weekends.
- The position also includes some minimal travel throughout the year.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in business.
- Operations or program management.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
- Certified Meeting Planner (CMP) certification.
- 5 to 7 years of relevant experience.
